It's all a matter of perception.
We all look down on people who qualify for the "Darwin Awards" - people who do stupid things that even someone with an IQ of 100 should know is dangerous...although whether they are stupid or just lack common sense is an issue to be debated.
But how many of us get into our cars, and as part of our "starting the car" ritual, immediately open up the cellphone and dial a number, and talk from the second you're in the car until the second you're out of it?
Until that one occasion when you get involved in an accident - either your fault because you were driving distracted, or someone else's fault because they were driving distracted.
On one occasion at my local Walmart, I saw a woman driving a big honking SUV, which fortunately had power steering. But she was maneuvering it this way and that, trying to get out of her parking spot without hitting anyone else, and doing it all with one hand on the wheel because her other hand was holding her cellphone to ear. And I'm thinking...could you not wait five minutes, until you'd actually gotten out of the parking lot - perhaps the place where most accidents happen in any given city! - before getting on your phone?
Driving is a dangerous business. Certainly so in such states as California and Florida. But really....everywhere. It is necessary to drive defensively at all times, and you can't do that if you're talking on a cellphone all the time...or worse, texting....or worse....sexting.
As for sexting...that's a rant for another time...but talk about stupidity...
